Its no secret that we are obsessed with our rubber ducks. We have so many different ones, it is so hard to pick a favourite. But they don’t compare to the giant duck created by a Dutch craftsman Florentijn Hofman.
From 2007, the giant rubber duck has appeared in many different cities and countries around the world from Pittsburgh in the USA to Auckland in New Zealand. Hofman wanted to create an artistic venture that recaptures the essence of childhood. Experts interpret the duck to be an entity that could provide relief from life’s everyday tensions and strains. Its calm colour tones did just that for many locals and tourists, attracting a lot of attention over the various locations.
In Hofmans own words “the rubber duck knows no frontiers; it doesn’t discriminate people and doesn’t have a political connotation. The friendly, floating rubber duck has healing properties: it can relieve Mondial tensions as well as define them the rubber duck is soft, friendly and suitable for all ages!”
The rubber duck has attracted lots of visitors in lots of different cities ranging from Saint-Nazaire, France in 2007 where it was at its biggest at a massive 105 feet tall, to Pittsburgh In the USA in 2013, as well as Santiago, Chile in 2017.
